Jeju Air Flight 2216 – December 29, 2024

On December 29, 2024, Jeju Air Flight 2216, a Boeing 737‑800, crashed on landing at Muan International Airport. The aircraft belly-landed after its landing gear failed to deploy, overran the runway, collided with a concrete-based navigational structure, and burst into flames

Passengers & Crew: 181 people were onboard (175 passengers, 6 crew). Tragically, 179 lives were lost—4 crew and 175 passengers. Two cabin crew in the rear survived with injuries

Probable Cause: A bird strike involving migratory Baikal teal ducks appears to have struck both engines shortly before the crash. Feathers and blood stains were found in the engines, possibly triggering cascading failures in hydraulics and landing gear systems thesun.ie+3en.wikipedia.org+3apnews.com+3. Black boxes ceased recording about four minutes prior to impact

Aftermath: Investigation continues, with black boxes sent to the U.S. for analysis. Authorities are reviewing airport barriers—excessive concrete structures like the ILS berm may have worsened the impact

Historical significance: This was South Korea’s deadliest airline disaster since 1997 and remains the worst ever on its soil

South Korean Navy P‑3 Orion Crash – May 29, 2025

In a separate military incident, a South Korean navy Lockheed P‑3 maritime patrol aircraft crashed near Pohang on May 29, 2025, during a training mission. All four crew members aboard were killed when the aircraft went down about six minutes after takeoff

The P‑3 fleet was grounded pending investigation, and a military task force has been set up to determine the cause
